How to make a brush holder from an old pair of jeans

Tutorial by Alyson Howell

First find the jeans and quickly remove them from the owner.

Cut alongside both side seams til just below the base of the pockets.

Now cut from one side seam to the other, below the pockets, across the base of the buttocks area, just at the top of the legs. You now have your basic shape for your brush roll

Notice that there is a space between the two pockets. Go to the front of the jeans and find a pocket that you can cut to fill this space.

Also from the front of the jeans cut off a couple of belt keepers. The piece of fabric you thread a belt through.

Now you are at the sewing stage. I used a close zig zag stitch. First sew the extra pocket onto the fabric between the 2 existing pockets. Leave the top open!

Now you will sew the brush channels on the pockets. Work out the width you need by looking at your brushes. Make some fatter and some thinner. Sew the individual brush channels by sewing a close zigzag line the from top to bottom of the pocket. Each pocket will have several brush channels.

Tidy the brush holder by zig zagging round the raw edges of the complete unit.

Now get ready to finish. I used one long sports shoe lace and zig zagged that to one seam side. Make sure the sewn on shoe lace extends beyond the top and bottom of the seam. This will enable you to roll and secure the brush holder when it is completed.

Turn the brush holder over so you are now working on the inside of the fabric.

Take the two belt tags and separately sew both of them onto the inside of the fabric about 2 to 3 inches in from the shoelace end. Place one belt tag just down from the top and one about half way down.

When you roll your brush holder you will be able to thread the end of the shoelace through these tabs to secure the roll.

Arrange for the original owner to get new jeans.
